Viral ‘BatDad’ is an Atlanta Local

batdadBlake Wilson is an Atlanta resident and father of four whose “BatDad” Vine videos have made him an internet sensation. A compilation of his Vine clips on YouTube racked up more than 4 million hits within three days after it was uploaded.

“BatDad” gave his backstory in an interview with BuzzFeed: “[M]y wife and I were shopping for a child’s birthday party [and] I saw that Batman mask and put it on just playing around. I ended up buying it and when we got in the minivan I put it on and told my wife, ‘I’m BatDad.’ I made that first vine about driving a minivan with the mask on and we just cracked up. It was so fun I just kept making them.”

“When I first got Vine i tried doing the typical ‘try to be funny’ stuff, and it actually drove my family kinda nuts,” Wilson adds. “I decided to stop doing that and just have fun with them by doing this BatDad stuff. My wife thinks its hilarious and my kids sometimes do (depending on their moods).”

BatDad has also been featured on The New York Daily News, Gawker, USAToday, and The Huffington Post (just to name a few).

BFOC – Big Fans on Campus

The following short films are both student-produced in the Atlanta area and full of geek fun. (And I promise no Harlem Shake videos in this one either.)

This first one has already been featured on The AFG’s Facebook page, but it’s so geeky and sublimely silly that it must be shared here as well.

Plot: A normal guy strolling across campus must transform into “Cardbart” to defend himself from attack by “The Evil Krogor the Corrugator.” Hilarity ensues.
Written/directed by and starring students from Southern Polytec State University in Marietta, GA (and who also happen to be members of Georgia Transformers Fans).

This second one comes by way of the Momocon Facebook group produced by Georgia State students as an entry in the 2013 Campus MovieFest contest:

LEST WE STARVE… a Life XP Production
Plot: “A group of friends finds some cash. Now it is a battle to the death. Who will win? What will they eat for dinner?” This is a goofy but amusing spoof of LARP-ing (Live-Action Role Play).

Georgia’s Top 10 Harlem Shake Videos

Georgia Ghostbusters "bust a move" -

Georgia Ghostbusters “bust a move” in Warner Robins, GA –

Since early February 2013, this “Harlem Shake” meme-dance-craze-fad-parody-thingie has exploded on the web so quickly that it’s doomed to die out even quicker.

And if you know what I’m talking about, you hope I’m right.

But before that happens (knowing full well this is dated as soon as it’s published), I thought I’d compile what I consider to be the most amusing and entertaining “Harlem Shake” videos produced in/around the Atlanta area. More than three hours were spent sorting through “Harlem Shake” created by locals, so perhaps there is someone reading this who will appreciate that I have taken the time to highlight the best of the lot of them. And there are a LOT of them.

My criteria for selection? Videos must be:

a) good-quality video
b) amusing and entertaining
c) preferably geeky in some way (like genre-related masks, props or costumes)
27) full of silly, stupid dancing fools

Following this list of random picks (with occasional commentary interjected), there’s a list of my top 10 favorites — all locally-produced in Georgia.
