+ Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo Group, LiveJournal
+ Fanpages: The D*Con Warriors, Facebook Group, Official D*Con Fan Tracks
Location: Downtown Atlanta, GA (see website for details)
Details: This con is held every Labor Day weekend and although it originally began as a fantasy-focused convention, it has since expanded well beyond that. I really enjoy this con mainly for the voice actor and animation-related panels. There’s unfortunately not much for Transformers fans in the way of guests or panels (and Stylin’ Online is usually the only dealer with TF merch), but Anime fans have their own Anime-Manga Track. It’s a great con with loads of entertainment value for all ages. (And beware of some of the vendors selling bootleg DVD product.)
– EYECON – Atlanta, GA – March 2-4, 2012
+ CON, LV, HO, COS
Details: Convention for fans of The CW TV series The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle.

– GAFILK – Georgia Filk Convention – 2012 date TBA
+ LV, SF, FA, CD
Location: Crowne Plaza Atlanta Airport Hotel.
Details: “Filk” has varying definitions depending on who you talk to, but at its core it’s “folk” music written and performed by genre fans with a science fiction/fantasy theme. GAFilk is an annual celebration of filk music based in the Atlanta area, and they’re also connected to the Dragon*Con Filk Track which takes place every Labor Day weekend in Atlanta.
– THE GEORGIA AQUARIUM
+ EX, FA, COL
Location: 225 Baker Street Northwest, Atlanta, GA
Phone: (404) 581-4000
Details: A really great exhibit and especially fun for families. The “Ocean Voyager” exhibit alone is worth the price of admission — it’s as close as most of us will ever get to experiencing what it would be like to walk on the bottom of the ocean. And you get to touch a live shark too. Seriously. (Maybe not as part of the “Ocean Voyager” exhibit, but you still get to touch a live shark.) The 4D show is a little too kid-friendly and cheesy and is only recommended if you bring kids with you.
– THE GEORGIA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL
+ LV, FA, FAM, MAT
Location: Fairburn, GA
Details: 2012 event runs April 14 – June 3. Highly recommended, and worth repeat visits during the festival.
– THE GOLDEN AGE RADIO SHOW
+ LV, FAM
Location: 2135 Defoor Hills – Suite E – Atlanta, GA 30318
Phone: (404) 872-7276
Details: Voice actor Scott Hilley (Adult Swim’s Squidbillies, Aqua Teen Hunger Force) regularly teaches a very informative and entertaining voice acting workshop at Expressions Theatre and Film (which I personally recommend). Future shows will be announced for Scott’s next “The Golden Age Radio Show” — a live radio theatre-style production featuring scripts from classic “old time radio” shows and showcasing students from his workshops. (And I’m both proud and honored to say I’ve performed in this show as well.)

* * * Since “The Atlanta Fandom Guide” is not actively updated, I suggest browsing the following websites for calendars covering all Atlanta-area events:
– The AJC’s Access Atlanta:
Details: Covers all ATL-area events.
Details: Covers all ATL-area events, dining, attractions, etc.
Details: Covers all ATL-area events, organized by categories and cities.
– Atlanta Retro:
Details: Excellent and comprehensive Atlanta-focused guide to “20th century pop culture activities in the 21st century, with an emphasis from the Roaring Twenties to the Outrageous Eighties and everything in between: burlesque, big band and swing dance, jazz, rockabilly, punk rock, disco, roller derby, vintage clothes and collectibles, cocktails, dining, classic movies including cult and exploitation films, classic TV, classic cars, and more.”
– Creative Loafing – Atlanta Events:
Details: CL's annual "Best of Atlanta" guide is just that, and it's made up of both their staff's editorial opinions and their readers' picks. And just an FYI: the CL's guide to Atlanta events tends to be more slanted towards more "indie" fare.

List compiled by Craig “Voiceroy” Crumpton
Special thanks to the TFW2005.com and AWA-CON.com members who have offered updates and contributions since this list was first created in 2006.
And props to Ken Arromdee — wherever you are — for his Atlanta, GA Anime/Manga Shopping Guide which sadly is no longer updated as of 2003. And for some semi-interesting history on fandom in Georgia, check the 1997 Southern Fandom Confederation Handbook & History.
